Film Review: The Magician, dir. Scott Ryan
'The Magician' is writer-director-actor Scott Ryan’s first feature film and employs ‘reality-doc’ techniques to follow Melbourne hit-man Ray Shoesmith.
Using out of sequence narrative, straight-to-camera talking, and interspersing extreme brutality with comedy, the film is edgy and entertaining. But it’s Ryan’s chilling portrayal of Ray which makes it memorable. His captivating performance leaves you unsure whether to love or fear him.
Though lacking the professionalism of similar films - such as ‘Man Bites Dog’ and ‘Leon’ - 'The Magician' still bodes well for Ryan’s next project.
'The Magician' is on UK release, 5th May 2006
